Moon Phases 101: Your Guide to the New Moon

“Wait, where’s the Moon?” If you’ve ever looked up a clear night sky and haven’t been able to locate the Moon, it was more than likely the New Moon. The Moon is always with us, even when we can’t see it with the visible eye, like during this phase. But there’s something to be said about its presence or more so it’s lack of shining brightly in the night sky. We’ve been slowly making our way through the moon phases giving each phase a rundown, and now it’s time to shed some light on the new moon!

While we could never pick a favorite phase, we can certainly say that this phase is special. If you’re ever used our Moon Phase Calculator to find out what the Moon looked like on your special day and found a New Moon, you’d also find that our lunar charms display a blue moon to represent this phase.

Where’s the Moon!?

So, where is the Moon really during this time? Don’t worry it’s there. It’s just not visible to the naked eye because during this phase the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun. That means that it blocks the Sun’s light and has nothing to reflect. If you’re trained in the night sky sometimes, you can make out where the new moon is because it can block out stars behind it. This is considered the first phase in the lunar cycle. Each progressing day the Moon waxes until we see the beautiful full moon again and then it will wane until it is back to the new moon.

What Should you be Doing During the New Moon?

While the lunar cycle begins again, this phase calls for us to do the same. To start anew, a fresh beginning that welcomes us each and every month. We love the idea of aligning ourselves with the phases of the Moon. It gives us a celestial structure that we can count on, a calendar in the sky for your very own use.

Bring a little light into the darkest night, light candles on the new moon to set the tone of ushering lots of light into the rest of your month. Set intentions for yourself, goals you want to work toward, both small and large or things you've been wanting to avoid ensuring you’re setting healthy boundaries. Plan your month with a list, things to try, tasks to complete, people to reach out to and visit. Don’t be afraid of the novel during this time. This phase is notorious for bringing new people into your life, be sure to take advantage of this and establish a new connection.

It has often been said that what you do during this phase will set the mood for the remainder of the month. Be sure to start off on the right foot.
